Poosanikkai Kootu /Curry

Finally, am back in India. Though we enjoy every bit of it, my baby is finding a hard time adjusting to the new environment he has never been before. He is sick and very cranky.. Still, we r kinda not yet settled and am njoying my days in my hometown Thanjavur now. Hope to get settle soon , may be in a month and start my daily routine.. Well, I've few ( few means many more ) pictures needs to be titled and blogged. This kootu picture work was already done ,so this one seems very easy for me to get the job done for time being.. I really missed seeing all ur wonderful blogs and missed submitting my comments..




Ingredients :
White Pumpkin -- 2 cups, chopped
Channa dhal / Kadalai paruppu -- 3/4 cup
Onions -- 1/4 cup, chopped
Tomato -- 1 no. , chopped
Green chillies -- 2 nos, acc to taste
Hing -- a big pinch
Salt -- to taste
Turmeric powder -- a big pinch
Coconut finely shredded -- 2 tsp , optional
Coriander Leaves -- 1 tbsp, finely chopped
Ghee -- 1/4 tsp


Tempering ingredients :
Oil -- 2 tsp
Mustard seeds -- 1/2 tsp
Urad dal -- 1 tsp
Curry leaves -- a sprig
Dry red chillies -- 1 no, broken




Method :

  • Pressure cook the channa dal along with green chillies, turmeric powder ,tomato, hing and few drops of oil to almost 90 % . 
  • Add the chopped white pumpkin pieces, onions, into the cooked dhal mixture and let them cook for 10 minutes /till they get cooked.
  • Heat oil in a small pan and fry the mustard seeds. Drop in the urad dal once the mustard seeds stops popping and fry till they turn golden. Now add in the broken dry red chillies and the curry leaves and saute well for few sec. Throw in the seasoned ingredients into the kootu and mix thoroughly. Finally add the shredded coconut ( if u add ) and mix well. Adding coconut is purely optional. At last, ad the coriander leaves and drizzle ghee on top of the kootu and combine well before serving.

  1. I had forgotten all about making koottu with chana dal. I end up making mine with toor dal or moong dal Thanks for reminding me. This is going on the menu for the weekend! :)
