Meen kulambu / Fish curry 2 using freshly ground spices...

Arachi vitta kulambu is very famous in villages and this is how my distant relative made this when we went Palliyur , a beautiful village in thanjavur district.... 



Ingredients :

Fish -- 1/2 kg  (ur choice of fish )
Onions -- chopped -- 1/2
Tamarind -- lemon sized
Garlic pods -- chopped -- 4 to 5 nos.
Fenugreek seeds -- 1/4 tsp
Curry leaves -- 1 sprig
Green chilly -- slit open -- 2 nos.

Sesame oil -- 1 tbsp

Cooking oil -- 2 tbsp

Toast and grind :

Peppercorns -- 1/2  tsp
Cumin seeds -- 1 tsp
Fennel seeds -- 1/4 tsp
Dry red chilly -- 4 to 5 nos.
Coriander seeds -- 1 tbsp

Table :2

To grind :

Shallots -- 1 medium
Tomato -- 1 medium
Coconut --shredded -- 1/4 cup
Turmeric powder -- 1/4 tsp

Method :

Clean the fish pieces and keep aside. Gently dry roast the ingredients given in the table 1 and grind it along with the ingredients given in the table 2 and make a semi fine paste. Soak the tamarind and squeeze out the pulp. Take a wide pan / kadai  and pour both the oil and heat. Add the chopped onion, curry leaves and the fenugreek seeds,green chilly one by one and do the seasoning. Now pour the ground masala ,salt and mix it well with the seasonings. Saute this mixture for 7 to 8 minutes and then add may be a cup of water and let them boil for 2 to 3 minutes. Pour the tamarind juice and scald well and again let it boil for few minutes. Finally add the fish ,cover it and cook for 2 mts. If u keep it long u fish would be broken .. Njoy !!!
