Milagu Pongal /Ven Pongal /Pepper Pongal

Milagu pongal is our family's favourite dish. Basically, it requires least amount of ingredients but i don know how that makes this dish delicious and awesome .The main two ingredients are Rice and moong dhal .Moreover, i like to have more moong dhal in my pongal so do VJ. I thinks it depends on one's taste. U may  +  or  -- the raitio of rice to moong dal. In general it is served as breakfast but we like to have it for dinner,..hahaha,..oh yeah.. a heavy one..So, here it goes..

Ingredient :

Rice -- 1 cup
Moong dhal --1/3 cup
salt -- acc to taste
Pepper powder --  1/4 tsp
Cumin powder -- 1/4 tsp
For seasoning :

Curry leaves -- 1sprig
Pepper -- 1/2 tbsp
Cumin seeds -- 1/2 tbsp
Grated ginger -- 1 tsp
Finnely chopped green chilly -- 1 tsp
Cashews -- 2 tbsp
Oil -- 1 tbsp
Ghee -- 1 tbsp

Method :

Dry roast the moong dhal till u get a nice aroma but do not let it sit in the pan for more than that.  We just want to heat up a little bit and thatz it. Soak this dhal for atleast 20 minutes. Clean the rice well. Pressure cook both rice and dhal with salt,pepper,cumin powder for 5 minutes after u get a whistle.The ratio of rice,dhal to water is 1 : 3. We want the rice and dhal get mashed up . So, adjust  the timings accordingly. In the meantime, take a wide pan and add the ghee and oil. Add the pepper and cumin seeds and go back may be a few steps away as it will pop up and that might hurt ur face. Now add the grated ginger,green chilly,curry leaves one by one and mix it well. Finally add the cashews and fry until it turns crispy . Finally transfer this mixture into the cooked dhal mixture and combine well. If the mixture is too thick u may add a cup of water when the pongal is hot. Or else, u may add a cup of hot water instead of cold water to make it little bit watery. Combine well. And NJOY !!! U can have this with gothsu, but i like idli sambar for this dish,..an ultimate match for Milagu pongal..and thatz gonna be my next post.....


Note :

I must thank my friends Sheena & Savitha who had  asked me to add oil instead of adding ghee totally. Thanks gals, I din't feel any difference for not adding lots of ghee. It tastes the same.Feeling guilty for adding ghee all these days...
