Meen Kulambu / Fish Curry

Meen Kulambu is my all time favourite. Especially my family (mom's ) likes Viral meen /Snake head fish. But being in abroad leaves some exceptions. In that list our first thing would be FOOD. After coming here ,fortunately i found a vietnamese shop with the help of  my hubbie's friend. There are so many varieties available but i bought a fresh Cat fish.. nothing but Kezhuthi meen in tamil ..  Here goes the recipe ...

Ingredients :

Fish -- Medium -- 1 no. ( cat fish )
Shallots (small) -- 5 to 10 no.
Curry leaves -- 1 sprig
Fenugreek seeds -- 1/2 tsp
Tomato -- 1 no.
Green chillies (cross slit open) -- 2 no.
Red chilli powder -- 3/4 tsp
Coriander powder -- 3 tsp
Turmeric powder -- 1/4 tsp
Salt -- acc to taste
Vegetable Oil -- 1 tbsp
Sesame oil -- 1 tbsp
Tamarind -- small lemon sized
raw mango -- 1 no. (optional)

Coconut Paste -- 4 tbsp (optional)

Method :
Chop the shallots into halves. If ur shallots are small u may leave it as such. Generally, shallots has to be used as a whole. But we get big shallots over here , thatz y i had to cut into halves. Chop the tomatoes into 4 halves. In a microwave safe bowl add a half cup of water and add the tamarind ball. Microwave it for 2 minutes. Leave it for few minutes. By the time u may do ur other chores. Squeeze out the pulp and keep it ready. Keep everything handy. Always use a wide pan when u cook fish curry. Cos we don want our fish to be broken. So take a wide mouthed pan and add both the oil . Add the fenugreek seeds  when the oil is hot. DO NOT BURN IT. Otherwise kulambu will taste bitter. Now add the onions, curry leaves, tomatoes, garlic and scald well for 1 minute. Wait for few minutes till the tomatoes becomes mushy. Now add the tamarind juice followed by turmeric powder, red chilli powder, corainder powder, salt and may be 1 1/2 cups of water. Let it boil well so the raw smell of all the powders and the T.juice disappears. Add the coconut paste (u may skip adding coconut paste and proceed the next step) and again give it a boil. Drop the mango too and cook for may be 3 minutes. Check the consistency , fish kulambu has to be a little bit gravy type. So wait until u have the desired consistency and finally add the fish. Just cook it for a minute or two .DO NOT OVERCOOK. Switch off and remove it from the hot stove.
